Movement - Hozier Prelim Task

How did you plan your sequence? What process did you use?
I firstly planned vaguely all my shots on a piece of paper, making sure they are similar to the shots of the original video. I then also story boarded the first minute in order to gain a greater understanding of the story line. Lastly I physically wrote every single shot, every angle and change of distance by the camera as an aid when shooting.

What technology did you use to complete the task, and how did you use it? What new effects/ programmes did you learn?
I simply used adobe Premiere Pro on my home computer.

What factors did you have to take into account when planning, shooting and editing?
I had to take into account the social distancing and awareness of the public. I was luckily able to film in specific areas which really helped with production.

How Successful was your music video/ magazine/ tv doc copy? Please identify what worked well and with hindsight, what would you improve/ do differently. What did others say about your production?
I took only one day to learn the choreography. With hindsight I would say that we should've spent more time learning and perfecting the dance section to get more precise and technically better in terms of dance. On the other hand, I'm really happy with how the editing of the video lines up almost perfectly to the original video. One last thing I would've changed is the van window shield at the start. The fact that the subject of the camera is barely visible beneath the window shield.

What have you learnt from completing this task? Looking ahead, how will this learning be significant when completing your music video?
I have learnt the importance of planning of these projects. I planned a lot during this time and I'm really happy with the outcome. I know that without this planning the outcome may have been very different.

What areas of NEA are your strengths and weaknesses? What will you practice over the summer to improve?
I need to improve on my cinematography, the camera work is very essential to creating representations in media. I need to work on which angles and distances from the subject portray it in certain ways. I'd say my editing is very strong after seeing the outcome of this project, the angles and cuts are very similar to the original video.

Hozier Official Webpage Analysis

Hozier's Official Page
This website immediately greets you with a clip from his 2019 release song "Wasteland Baby". This video plays in the background of the website continuously as you scroll down to view various albums and tickets available. The whole video playing on repeat features Hozier underwater sitting on a chair watching various household appliances such as books and flowers slowly rise to the surface of the water. This video gives an aesthetic light blue tone to the whole page and constantly plays the simple two shots throughout your time on the website.
The font is a simple capital block like font with the exception of his name and the title of his newest album in a hand drawn, roughly sketched, capital font. All the text at the top of the home page is in a plain white colour, until you scroll down to view tickets and events. These events are laid out in a messy aesthetic, much like the top of the home page. Each event or ticket is given its own worn parchment as seen here:

This style is continued throughout the website. A sort of roughly sketched, relaxed tone. In the main image of the continuously playing video on the home page, Hozier is wearing a grey tank top and a white shirt which has been unbuttoned, letting the shirt spread out and be influenced by the clear blue water. This also gives this relaxed, laid back tone as if he has come home from work, letting himself and his clothes be influenced and carried effortlessly by the water. This relaxed tone is also carried throughout his music, which is known for being calming and relaxing. Perhaps this could symbolise the necessity to sometimes let go of the control in life and relax, letting the figurative water carry you away. Literally going with the flow.

2 Music Videos and Analysis

Childish Gambino - This is America

This 4 minute long music video vocalised by rapper Donald Glover contrasts the cultural, joyful connotation of traditional music to the violence, and threat of society symbolised through guns. Starting with a traditional, joyful tune suddenly breaking this by producing a gun from thin air and shooting a guitarist. The symbolism through use of guns shows the suppression of society perhaps revealing a message about race or any traditional folk music. Abruptly stopping any attempt by shooting and killing. Replacing the joyful, up beat music with a low base repeated tone. As the song goes on the main actor (being Donald Glover himself) continues to shoot and kill more people. Finally finishing with a simple shot of Glover running through a hallway with lots of people being revealed to chase him at the end. Perhaps further symbolising the oppression message behind the video.

John Legend - Preach

This music video by John Legend is to give a voice to those effected by the criminal justice system. Challenging stereotypes and breaking down barriers, they are helping to end this mass incarnation and invest in just, equitable, and thriving communities across the US. With a moment drawn throughout the video of two black men getting stopped by the police without knowing what they did wrong. One of the young men gets shot and then we cut to a church, with people wearing black, to what we (as the audience can assume) is a funeral. Portraying injustice and inequality. Another moment shows a young white man carrying a large gun into a school. Revealing what the first few shots prior to this, of children running in a school, is all about. This stereotype is challenged as black men are perceived in the media to be far more dangerous than white men, further portraying the injustice and sheer racism rife everywhere.
